A confession. When I was first asked to contribute to this project I said no. I couldn't see how my 3D knitted work would go on a map. And I was overwhelmed with life under lockdown, which included some unexpected caring for an older relative.
But I kept thinking about it and wondering what I could do that felt relevant now. And as I’ve been spending most of my time thinking of family and working on Three Storeys, a new collaborative art space for Nailsworth, I thought I might be able to combine the two.
So I went back to the very beginning of my textile journey, when I first started stitching cross stitch pictures as a child under the influence of my Danish grandmother. I’ve always loved the quiet discipline of the Danish cross stitch (even if my eyes and fingers can’t cope with it for long), and I’ve made bespoke pieces over the years to mark significant occasions.
I raided my stash, did some test pieces to establish scale, and charted up the Three Storeys logo. Stitched as a small badge which, to me, represents one of my hopes for the future, when we can work and exhibit together again.
I'm so pleased I changed my mind.
